The Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers

Court Assistants Lorraine Parkin and Alan McLintock recently had the absolute pleasure of meeting students from the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers linked inner London school, Mulberry University Technical College. The students were graduating from the Young Professionals summer school held at City St. George’s University of London. Students from seven inner city schools attended.

The free programme, aimed at upskilling students, gave them a glimpse into journalism, law, entrepreneurship and medicine among other professions. The programme was funded by the City of London Corporation, with donations from Livery companies (including the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers) and the Lord Mayor of London. The summer school gave a chance for these students to work with academics and explore the campus.

There are two broad themes to the summer school, firstly, personal skills including how students can overcome any social anxiety, speak professionally and be confident enough to take up opportunities, secondly being introduced to several different professions that they had little or no awareness of as well as ways to enter these professions. There are multiple workshops during the school.

The highlight for us was hearing the young student selected to give her thanks to the staff and sponsoring livery companies on behalf of the students where she noted that without the benefit of the summer school, she would never have had the confidence to stand up and speak in front of everyone.
