Lunchtime on 27 September saw the Master and Deputy Master, together with a group of Liverymen and members of the Management Accounting Service (Army) (MAS(A)) gather for lunch at the George in Southwark prior to the annual Sheep Drive across Southwark Bridge.

The Sheep Drive celebrates the ancient right of a Freeman of the City to bring sheep to market over the Thames toll free. It is organised by the Woolmen, with funds raised going to the Woolmen Charity and the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.

We were pleased that a number of members of MAS(A), one of our military affiliations, could join us for the day. After a convivial lunch, where most of the party opted for roast lamb, we headed off the the north side of Southwark Bridge to register for our session. There is always a great atmosphere and an opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping at the Livery Fair.

Unsurprisingly there is no opportunity for participants to herd sheep themselves, as the sheep, who are remarkably tolerant, are controlled by a group of shepherds. Despite this, it was very much enjoyed our group, and I would recommend anyone who is eligible to consider participating as it raises money for two very good causes.
