Around Midsummer and Michaelmas each year, Liverymen elect the Sheriffs and then the Lord Mayor, as they have done since 1475. This assembly of ‘Common Hall’, at which those for high office in the City are selected, is quite a spectacle.
Following the election of Sheriffs in June, Common Hall will gather once again at the Guildhall on Monday 29th September to elect the Lord Mayor.
Taking part in Common Hall is a privilege of being a Liveryman. Freemen, spouses and guests are not eligible to attend Common hall; they are, however, very welcome to join for Lunch afterwards.
